Radio 2 Young Brass Award 2017

Thursday 29 September, 2016

BBC Radio 2 has announced details of the Radio 2 Young Brass 2017. The award is the network’s nationwide search for emerging young brass musicians, and provides performers with the chance to progress with their future in music, as well as an opportunity to showcase their musical talents. The competition is open to brass players from the ages of 16 to 21, who must be resident in the UK.

Based on the initial entries eight successful semi-finalists will be invited to record up to ten minutes of music of their own choice with Foden’s Band at the BBC Studios in Salford on Saturday 11 February. The judges will select four players to go through to the Final, which will be broadcast live on BBC Radio 2 from the Royal Northern College of Music Manchester on Friday 21 April. The winner will get the chance to perform on Radio 2’s Listen to the Band and will also secure a broadcast performance with an established group.

For details on how to enter, go to the Radio 2 Home page - bbc.co.uk/radio2 or www.bbc.co.uk/youngbrassaward. People can also contact the competition with any queries by email at youngbrassaward@bbc.co.uk

Previous winners include Matilda Lloyd, who this summer made her Proms solo debut and toured as principal trumpet with the European Union Youth Orchestra, Ross Knight, who attended the Karajan Academy in Berlin and performed with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra before becoming principal tuba of Orchestre de la Suisse Romande in Geneva, Grant Jameson, who has just been appointed solo euphonium of Flowers Band and the 2016 winner, Daniel Thomas, who plays with Black Dyke Band.

The deadline for entries is 23:59 on Wednesday 30 November 2016.
